LAMUT, Ifugao, Dec. 10(PIA)- - The Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) conducted a Science for the People (SFTP) Caravan at the Ifugao S&T Center here featuring the Philippine Carabao Center's (PCC) technologies on carabao production and milk products.

Resource speakers from PCC located at Munoz City, Nueva Ecija discussed the housing requirements, feeding formulation, management, milk production, milk processing and other techniques in livestock production.

Technologies in livestock production such as artificial insemination or in vitro (in glass) embryo production have potential usages and contributions, they said. Among these are shorter period for improving breed, increase offspring production, facilitates production of selected breed and breed line, preservation of superior genetic qualities, multiplication of rare animals and endangered species.

It also cuts transportation cost (transport of embryo instead of the animal), contributes to the study of sterility low fertility, as well as biology and medicine and international cooperation in livestock breeding through international trade of embryo.

They shared that forage establishment, proper feeding and nutrition of the carabaos have several advantages such as high quality of food, high milk production, good and healthy offspring in reproduction, lower expenses in commercial feeds, help increase the fertility of the soil, help prevent erosion, there is food supply in case of emergencies and easier and faster to get animal feeds.

Forages include plants, leaves, legumes and grasses and the health of the carabao depends on the forage considering the factors of choosing the right plants, climate, quality of soil, method of planting, proper care and consumption or harvesting the forage.

Proper nutrition is also very important to have high production of meat, milk and offspring as it will give good health and normal growth to the animal and make them resistance to diseases.

The speakers explained that nutrition needs of carabao include water to maintain body temperature and carry the nutrients to all parts of their body, carbohydrates and also serve as grease or oil for their body, carbohydrates for their growth and reproduction, maintain body heat and for the production of meat and milk, fats and oil which is one of the most important component of milk and needed in the synthesis for the reproduction of hormones.

Protein is needed to maintain the growth and development of the animal and in fetal development. It also accelerates the healing of wounds and damaged tissues, minerals for strong bones, teeth and other parts of the body; regulates metabolism of the body, and helps in the normal functioning of the body. Vitamins ae needed to increase resistance and also helps in the normal functions of the body.

There are also feed supplements like concentrate and mineral mix, farm by-products such as rice straw, corn stover, cassava and sweet potato leaves, peanut straw, banana by-products and water hyacinth and industrial by-products like spent grain, molasses, copra meal and rice bran.

DOST CAR Regional Director Nancy Bantog led the event that aims to promote and encourage the adoption and commercialization of technologies to improve the lives of the people.

Ifugao DOST Provincial Director Genna Jallorina and her staff welcomed the participants during the event and presented the programs, projects and activities of the DOST. (JDP/DBC- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
