Trump labels Mueller’s team of ‘thugs’ a ‘national disgrace’

WASHINGTON, U.S. - In his latest salvo against Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged collusion between Russia and his campaign - the U.S. President Donald Trump levelled more accusations against the team of investigators.

Trump’s attacks on Monday, followed his doubling down on the investigation being led by Mueller on Sunday morning, in which he likened Mueller’s “disgusting witch hunt” to “McCarthyism” and even slammed the “Failing New York Times” for its latest bombshell expose on Don McGahn.

On Saturday, the New York Times revealed that the White House counsel Donald McGahn has been cooperating with Mueller in his Russia collusion probe.

The report also revealed that McGahn spoke to investigators about Trump’s 2017 firing of former FBI Director James Comey along with the president's repeated urging of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to claim oversight of the special counsel despite his recusal from Russia probes.

Both these issues form the crux of Mueller’s probe into possible obstruction of justice by the President.

First Trump tried to downplay the report, by tweeting that he had allowed McGahn, and all other requested members of the White House Staff, to fully cooperate with Mueller in a bid for transparency.

Yet, the report had revealed something integral - that McGahn has had three ‘voluntary’ interviews with Mueller's team totalling 30 hours.

Enraged over the expose, on Sunday, Trump denounced Mueller’s “rigged and disgusting witch hunt,” as “McCarthyism at its WORST!”

He slammed the “Failing New York Times” for implying that McGahn had turned on him and wrote, “The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel, he must be a John Dean type “RAT.” But I allowed him and all others to testify - I didn’t have to. I have nothing to hide....and have demanded transparency so that this Rigged and Disgusting Witch Hunt can come to a close. So many lives have been ruined over nothing - McCarthyism at its WORST! Yet Mueller & his gang of Dems refuse to look at the real crimes on the other side - Media is even worse!”

He continued his attacks in subsequent tweets, repeatedly pointing out, “No Collusion and No Obstruction.”

“Midterm meddling”

Then, on Monday, Trump turned to personal attacks, slamming Mueller as “disgraced and discredited” and branded his team as “Angry Democrat Thugs.”

The President claimed that the team of investigators working on Mueller's Russia investigation "are looking to impact" this November's midterm elections.

Labelling Mueller's team a "national disgrace,” Trump wrote on Twitter, “Disgraced and discredited Bob Mueller and his whole group of Angry Democrat Thugs spent over 30 hours with the White House Councel [sic], only with my approval, for purposes of transparency. Anybody needing that much time when they know there is no Russian Collusion is just someone looking for trouble.”

He continued, "They are enjoying ruining people’s lives and REFUSE to look at the real corruption on the Democrat side - the lies, the firings, the deleted Emails and soooo much more! Mueller’s Angry Dems are looking to impact the election. They are a National Disgrace!"

The president reiterated in a subsequent tweet, "Where’s the Collusion? They made up a phony crime called Collusion, and when there was no Collusion they say there was Obstruction (of a phony crime that never existed). If you FIGHT BACK or say anything bad about the Rigged Witch Hunt, they scream Obstruction!"

Trump’s accusation of ‘midterm elections meddling’ comes as the campaign season heats up ahead of the November election when control of both houses of Congress is expected to be up for grabs.

It also comes in light of recent polls that have predicted a "blue wave" of Democratic victories prompted by the president's low job-approval poll numbers.

The endless string of controversies churning out from the White House is further seen to be dampening Republican prospects ahead of the crucial elections.
