European observers restricted by Russia
Baton Rouge News.Net Tuesday 30th September, 2008
300 European observers, who were scheduled to monitor the retreat of Russian troops from Georgia, have been excluded from certain areas of the country.
On the eve of the EU mission to Georgia, Moscow announced that observers would have to stay out of a security zone, south of the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
With approximately 800 Russian troops stationed in Georgia, the ban on the observers has led to Georgian doubts about the success of the EU mission to ensure the Russians leave undisputed Georgian territory by 10th October.
The move to replace Russian troops with the European Union observers was part of an EU-brokered peace plan.
The European Union monitoring mission is aimed at ensuring the peace deal between Georgia and Russia holds, after their conflict over the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
